Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation

Rare Cancers

Rare Cancers represent approximately 25% of all cancers.

Fibrolamellar (fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma) represents less than:

  • 1% of all liver cancers
  • 1% of teen and young adult cancers (ages 15-39)
  • 1% of rare cancers

That's why little research had been conducted on fibrolamellar.

Fibrolamellar is a rare cancer. In fact, it is very rare, with only 200 or so cases per year, but that does not mean it is insignificant.

Research funding for rare cancers has taken a back seat to funding for common cancers because "big pharma" cannot always afford to invest in treatments for diseases with a small incidence. It is often not profitable. The risk vs. reward is too high for corporations required to provide a return on investment.

FCF is trying to help change that by funding rare cancer research - directly targeted to curing fibrolamellar, then applying findings from that research towards other cancers which exhibit similarities.

There are over 100 rare cancers and many times more subtypes of those. For a list of these rare cancers, go to www.rarecare.eu
